New research done in Brazil, results that CBD may have a positive effect on the symptoms of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most common substances found in marijuana, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound not like THC that gives you a high. The results of previous studies showed that CBD has a very positive effect on people with anxiety and other obsessive-compulsive behavior.

The research team, led by Dr. Francisco Guimarães of the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine, tested the CBD on rats that were treated with the drug mCPP. This drug is used to activate the symptoms of OCD.

The results were most interesting, even at a very low dose, the CBD managed to reverse the obsessive-compulsive behavior caused by the mCPP drug. "a possible anti-compulsive effect of CBD" the authors published in the journal Fundamental Clinical Pharmacology. They concluded that this study added support to previous studies.

It was thought for many years serotonin levels had a key role in OCD. Researchers still have not found why CBD reduces obsessive-compulsive symptoms, but several studies suggest that our CB1 receptors are activated by the CBD compound.

Relief from this disorder may be due to the interaction of serotonergic and cannabinoid systems, the authors of the latest study say.

Through the interaction of these two systems (serotonergic and cannabinoid), it suggests together they control the repetitive behaviors, although it is not yet clear how this interaction works.

In a study that was published in 2011, researchers reduced the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive behavior in rats with a synthetic cannabinoid similar to THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). This indicates that CBD from the marijuana plant is not the only compound that can help with these kinds of disorders.

Although the test results are based on animal testing and not tested on humans yet, scientists believe that in the future OCD may be controlled by the use of cannabinoids.
